a coffee date...

If we were on a coffee date, we would get our coffee to go and walk around Downtown Redlands, because the weather has been beautiful lately.

If we were on a coffee date, we would talk about the Taylor Swift album and the new Bethel album, because both have carried me through this week.

If we were on a coffee date, we would talk how I am going to Texas tomorrow. Also, I found a list of shooting locations from “Friday Night Lights”. Among them are the Panthers Field and Tim Riggins’ house…

If we were on a coffee date, I would talk to you about how I have been a crazy hot mess of a person lately; I haven’t been acting in wisdom, but rather my own desires, and I am praying that the Lord redeems conversations and actions.

If we were on a coffee date, I would ask you if asking and trusting God for things that are not promised to us grows or stunts our faith… Is this foolish or a reflection of deep faith? #hardquestions

If we were on a coffee date, we would also talk about pain and deep wounds and the sting of hurt pride.

If we were on a coffee date, I would end on a funny note and tell you that this week, one of my junior high girls thought Tijuana was another word for crack. He older brother, who is in high school, also talked to me about the Sadie Robertson Dance… For those who need clarity, she meant marijuana and he meant the Sadie Hawkins Dance. I LIVE FOR MOMENTS LIKE THESE.

for the love of 2014...

Looking back on 2014, it was the year of Ebola and missing planes and Taylor Swift and the selfie stick.

It was also the year where I started really following the Angels, began struggling with fear and worry, my rib started popping out of place routinely, had my wisdom teeth removed, gained two new roommates, lost 35 pounds, celebrated weddings and babies, mourned losses, took risks, went hydro-biking, read great books, learned leadership under a new boss, began substitute teaching, visited home for the first time in 3 years, got my first credit card, met weekly with a solid mentor, participated in Dressember and bought a couch.

I look back in 2014 and see the fullness of life; the things gained and lost, the joys and the hardships, the encouragement from friends and the hard conversations had, the excitement and the anxiety. FULL, a year that is bursting at the seams, a year that will most definitely bleed into the next.

This year my theme from the Lord was discipline, and holy Moses, was I challenged in that! In every area, mentally, physically, spiritually, emotionally… my life was rocked by Christ; the theme came from a verse in Hebrews…

“No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening… its painful! But afterward, there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way.”
(12:11)

Little did I know, learning discipline would teach me the difference between faith and fear, the sovereignty of God, and how to trust and to become less of a control freak with my life and let Jesus take the wheel (thank you for the ever popular reference, Carrie Underwood).

This past year was filled to the brim with hardship and joy, and even though it was at sometimes painful, the Word of the Lord proves right; there is a peaceful harvest to be gleaned as I walk into 2015. I take the harvest of this past year into this next year, remembering all that I have been taught, all that I have been trained in. Am I saying that I have achieved righteous living? Not at all, this sinner has a LONG way to go my friends (and a lot of guilty pleasures to part with a.k.a. The Mindy Project). BUT, I am saying that this year has taught me more of what righteous living looks like, to discipline yourself in the Word, in wise counsel, in time management, in clean living and eating, in budgeting, in my resources.

This year, I wrestled with God and walked away limping. My theology drastically changed because of that, in the best ways possible.

Don’t cast 2014 to the wayside, leaving it behind in the dust in light of a new year. Remember all the things He has done for you and through you this past year, because the person He molded during 2014 will be the same person He pulls into 2015.

(But lets leave Ebola in 2015, that thing needs to be left
behind, for the love of all good things.)

a coffee date (in red cups!)...

If we were on a coffee date, I would order something in a red cup, most likely a peppermint mocha, at 130, because I am not a fan of hot drinks, actually.

If we were on a coffee date, I would tell you that I am all about this “Blank Space” epidemic. It’s my new jam, and I don’t care who sees me car dance. Also, Hilary and Kate are my new obsession and they just happen to be doing a free show at a local, hip coffee shop in December. SIGN ME UP.

If we were on a coffee date, I would gush about how much I love being a substitute teacher at our local Christian junior high and high school! It’s the best, but I don’t think I will ever get used to being called “Miss Howell”.

If we were on a coffee date, I would talk to you all about my Christmas crafts. America is in full-blown Christmas mode, and I just can’t fight it anymore. I may have bought myself a mini tree. And put my Christmas table décor out. And began listening to Christmas playlists. And WHO AM I RIGHT NOW? Seriously, Christmas belongs in December… (Right?)

If we were on a coffee date, I would ask you about your holidays and Friendsgivings and Christmas plans. Sometimes, friends and family can be crazy at this point of the year, and it’s good to talk about it, all of it, the good, bad, and ugly. Those crazy uncles and weird traditions, lets talk about all that.

If we were on a coffee date, I would remind you that God sees you. He sees you, wherever you are, whatever valley you are in, He sees you.

What is your go-to red cup drink? Something with peppermint? The new latte from Starbucks? (Sidenote: for the love, there are like 12 different nuts in that thing, I am slightly intimidated and don’t feel like I want to order that business.)
